The Saddlery Building was built in 1881 by Mr. J. Rubelman of Muscatine, Iowa, who decided that Des Moines, with its two rivers and 13 railways, would be advantageous to his thriving saddlery company.  He was right, and ran a successful saddle, harness, and leather works for almost 20 years.

Since that time, the building has also been home to a shoe maker, rubber company, stove manufacturer, glove company, the Krispy Kone Company and the Kaplan Hat Company (which was also the name of the restaurant once located on the first floor).  After the flood of 1993, during which the building housed 19 feet of water, the ground level was left vacant until 1996 when Court Avenue Restaurant & Brewing Company started to move in its brewing equipment.

The brew pub’s decor and our beer labels celebrate the history of the building and brewing in Iowa.  Our beer labels are spin-offs from old defunct Iowa breweries that died out during prohibition.  Almost all of our pictures, posters, signs, and bottles are antiques from bygone Iowa breweries.

Court Avenue Restaurant & Brewing Company is dedicated to brewing beers of premium quality and character.  All of our beers are handcrafted by our brewer utilizing the traditional methods of our early American ancestors.  We use only the finest natural ingredients: malted barley, hops, yeast, and pure water.  Brewing on site enables us to brew according to demand; assuring our customers the freshest beer possible.  There is no substitute for a truly fresh beer!

Court Avenue Brewing Company’s Beers

Two Rivers Light
Our Two Rivers Light is the lightest brew we produce and is a great  introduction to craft beer or alternative for the person who enjoys macro lagers.

Belgian White
An old Belgian farmhouse style, our white (or wit) is a wheat beer brewed with coriander and Curacao orange peel. A distinctive yeast strain, coupled with these spices, produces a cloudy, almost white beer, that’s fruity, spicy and exceptionally refreshing.

Kaplan Hat HefeWeizen
A classic German wheat beer. Hazy and golden, this beer features notes of banana, clove and citrus. Finishes with a dry, pleasant hoppy note.

Topping Pale Ale
An English style pale ale, also known as ordinary bitter. Slightly nutty, malt flavors, blend with earthy hop flavors and aromas. Citrus notes from dry hopping with Goldings. Copper in color, an exceptionally well balanced beer.

Honest Lawyer I.P.A.
Our west coast India Pale Ale. Brewed with huge doses of hops (almost 20 lbs. per batch). This beer features loads of piney, citrusy, hoppy flavors and aromas. Floral and grapefruit notes throughout.
This bronze colored beauty is highly recommended by the brewer.

Pointer Brown Ale
Southern English style of brown ale. Caramel, chocolate, slightly roasty flavors dominate the profile of this beer. Brewed to be flavorful and highly drinkable at the same time.

BlackHawk Stout
A dry oatmeal stout. Coffee, roast and chocolate flavors throughout, very smooth body from the addition of flaked oats. The use of six different malts makes this a very complex beer.
