Some years ago, three Amana men decided to revive the art that hasn’t been practiced in Amana for years – the art of brewing beer. Carroll F. Zuber and brothers James and Dennis Roemig dreamt of building a small brewery to produce small batches of hand brewed beer reminiscent of Europe’s finest brews.
To brew the best they needed the best, so they called on one of America’s premier brewers, Joseph Pickett Sr., who helped in the brewery design, in the development of the beers, Millstream Lager and the robust, Schild Brau. Later, Millstream Brewers, developed the zesty Millstream Wheat Beer.
In 1985 Millstream Brewing Co. opened its doors – the first brewery to operate in Amana since 1884. So the Millstream Brewery was born and so it has come to be recognized as the home of quality brews of rewarding taste.
The Story Continues in 2000 with the sale of the brewery to Chris Priebe, Aaron Taubman, and Teresa Sly Albert. Aaron is from a biochemistry background, and so is good at keeping the brewing yeast happy, an important part of the beer making process. Chris is naturally handy, and keeps the “classic” bottler in tip-top shape. Aaron and Chris are also both trained brewers from the Siebel Institute of Brewing Technology. Teresa is an excellent people person and handles all the sales and marketing. It takes a good team to run a good brewery!
The new owners are committed to making quality brews, one batch at a time. The brewers introduced the Millstream German Pilsner, a beer whose hop bite is appreciated by today’s beer drinkers. They were so excited by the Pils that they kept on creating. Research was done into traditonal german bock beers, resulting in the Schokolade Bock, and an improved Maifest (MaiBock). Also a new Ale, Warsh Pail ale was created to spice up the product line. And of course, the Schild Brau Amber is still the brewery’s number one beer.
The new owners hope to be able to reach out to local consumers in new and exciting ways. Long live beer made in Iowa!
Millstream Brews
Schild Brau Amber
The name Schild Brau means essentially ‘Shield beer’ in German. This is our Flagship brew, a Microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna style lager. This style was first developed by Anton Dreher in Vienna in 1841. He used a new type of sweet caramelized malt that gave the beer a wonderful reddish, coppery color and a juicy malt character. Word soon spread to Germany where this style of beer became immensely popular, and stronger versions called Marzen or Oktoberfest were soon made. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. Our Hallertau hops are imported from Germany give it subtle spicy flavor. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirm why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewing at its best.
Windmill Wheat
Our lightest beer, this is a popular brew in rural Iowa. Malted wheat is carefully blended with the traditional malted barley, and brewed with special hops to create a “Summer Fest” beer. Light and zesty in itself, the beer is served in a tall glass with a slice of lemon.
John’s Generations White Ale
White Ale’s are belgian style of beer, often refered to as “Wit” beer. Our version of this classic style is a wonderful spicy brew, infused with coriander and orange peel. It has a crisp refreshing flavor, and a slight ‘white’ haze from the large percentage of wheat used in the mash.
Iowa Pale Ale
Pale Ale’s on the coasts of this country are turning into hoppy monsters, but our beer is more mild, and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base. It gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops. This beer was first made in a few small test batches in 2003. The response was so incredibly positive, that it has worked it’s way into a year round beer. A hoppy IPA in the central plains… how exciting!
