Impact
In 2022, the craft beer industry continues to grow, logging double-digit increases year after year, including a 25% increase in 2013 and 17.6% increase in 2014, according to the national Brewers Association.
Iowa currently boasts over 115 breweries across the state in 76 communities. Iowa Craft Beer Economic Impact Study, funded by the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board, revealed that the Iowa craft brewing industry supports 1,500 jobs, has a $100 million impact on the economy, and produced nearly 41,000 barrels of beer in 2014. By 2018, the Iowa brewing industry produced over 120,000.
In 2022, Iowa’s craft breweries generated over $1.25 Billion of economic impact. This includes beer brewed by craft brewers as it moved through the three tier system (breweries, wholesalers, and retailers) as well as all non-beer products like food and merchandise sold in taprooms. The tax on wholesale beer funds the Iowa Beer and Wine Promotion Board to help boost beer tourism in the state.
Over 30 breweries in the state have been certified as Green Breweries. Through a partnership with the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa Green Brewery Certification is awarded to breweries demonstrating commitment to energy efficiency, sustainable material management, and water quality conservation.
